The Mysterious Plain of Jars <2009.09.21>

Just 300km east of Luang Prabang lays Phonsavan. A sleepy little town which hasn`t changed the past 30 years. It might sound close but it takes you 8 hours along winding roads over several mountains.

Once you are there you will be welcomed by a group of head hunters who will guide you to their guest house and sell you the trip to the main attraction of this region: The visit of the Plain of Jars.

A big mystery lies on this site which hasn`t been clarified as of today. It consists of several ancient sites with hundreds of huge stone jars; 1 -3m in height and weight up to 2.5 tons each! They are least 2.500 years old and it`s not clear who made them and specially how they had been moved to the place they are today.

The area was heavily bombed during the Vietnam war so many sites had been destroyed or are still to dangerous to access due to many still armed land mines. Only 3 sites are still open to public and those we are going to visit today.

All featuring different size of jars and scenery which makes every site worth a visit. To explore by yourself is possible but I wouldn`t do so as the roads are rough and the sites hardly marked. Further there is a lot of police attention and registration procedures which you leave better to locals.

We did the course easily in half a day and visited afterwards the old city with the only temple around.

Was a great day – worth the detour – where we could experience one of the view open mystery`s of our planet.
