Luang Prabang - City of Kings <2009.09.17>

We spent 3 days here in Luang Prabang where you easily can spent a week considering all the temples and sites of interest which you find in and around the city.

A great day starts with a great breakfast, thus we found ourselves every morning in the oldest bakery in town – the Scandinavian Bakery. For sure no secret anymore – it is the best in everything they serve. (Evening hint: Here you will get the best Pizza in Southeast Asia!!!)

Strengthened for the 2 day temple rally we started into the day. We did the inner temples on the first day and rent a bike for the outer ones on the second day.

An omissible event is every morning at 5:30 when thousands of monks come down the streets to get the food offerings from the local people expecting better karma. Tourists are welcome but asked to observe and not to participate.

Next we hire a boat and visited the holy Pak Ou cave temple which can only accessed from the Mekong. On the way we stop in a whiskey village which produces alcohol made of sticky rice.

Interesting part – the mix in scorpions, snakes or earth wasps which give the spirit a smoother taste (TRUE – I tasted it!)

The cave features a collection of countless Buddha statues which were brought by local prayers hoping for better fortune.

All in all nice but not really a must see if you are short in time.
Much more impressive we found are the majestic Kuang Si waterfalls with picturesque swim holes. Here you easily can spend a whole day hiking the falls and relaxing in one of the turquoise pools.

Luang Prabang is my favorite place in Laos and I just can recommend everyone not to miss it due to its remote location and bring enough time with you.

Here you find 100% Laos
