And that’s how you look like afterwards …
When you cross the border, you immediately can feel a difference. Even the roads are different – they seem to be newer and more interesting, not to forget to great sky`s here in the north!
Our first focus is on Katherine – a nice small city where you can refill your stock and get ready for the trip into the Kakadu National Park further north. (From Crocodile Dundee)
Katherine has within the city hot springs with crystal clear water in lush tropical vegetation. No need to say - here we are:
The night we spend near the Katherine Gorge – known now as Nitmiluk NP - where we took the river cruise in the morning to get a closer look into 3 of the 13 gorges!
Here in the north, you have beautiful beaches & rivers, BUT they are also loved by the crocodiles, so forget about swimming. Only if you are as fast as the Australian National Team (and that`s where they do the training ;-) than you can give it a try.
If you think about Australian bush (not Gorge W. Bush ;-) than quickly you may think about bush fires!

But there are still nice swimming places within the NPs – just look out for water pools or water fall areas – most are crocodile free and gorges places to take a refreshing dip.

Yes they are always present – even now in the ”cold” season more then when it is real dry. The reason is that the land is treated with “controlled” fires which are only possible right now.
Thus it is nothing special that the road you drive on is covered in black smoke with fire coming from your left & right. Still they didn`t look controlled to me …
Heading next to one of Australians most famous NP –the Kakadu NP - close to Darwin. It consists of the biggest stone painting collection in the world and is also the habitat for most crocodiles around.
We started this world heritage on the yellow water river which is a yearlong water system which is the ideal breeding ground for bird life & reptiles.
The river cruise passes you along the alligator river which has its name for a reason:
Australia has 2 of about 20 species of crocodiles: The harmless and smaller sweet water croc (sweeties) & the deadly and f**king huge salt water crocs (salties). Those above are of course SALTIES!
I loved this moment when we met the fishermen who didn`t realized their buddy coming from the left – can you see it?!
